Obama campaign promotes Facebook timeline covers, shows social media awareness

The Obama campaign spanned three social networks with one tweet and one word Saturday, Feb. 11, to share a Tumblr blog containing Facebook timeline covers of the President. It is a savvy use of social media by campaign staff.

The single word the official Barack Obama Twitter account for the 2012 campaign tweeted was, "Cool." The tweet--not signed by the President's signature '-BO'--then simply linked to the "Barack My Timeline!" blog.

The Tumblr blog's tagline encourages users to, "Show your support of President Obama with your Facebook timeline's cover photo." There are 20 cover photo options to chose from, all but two containing images of Obama. One timeline photo is a two-by-four tiling of a campaign poster and another is a jobs creation graph.

There are pictures of Obama smiling, looking presidential with flags, strolling with Vice President Joe Biden and whispering into the ear of First Lady Michelle Obama.

Thirteen of the covers include a gradiated blue bottom bar that contains a red arrow pointing to where a user's Facebook avatar would be. After the arrow are the words "I'M IN."

The blog claims that it is not affiliated with any political campaign, which is part of the appeal of the share. It highlights that the campaign is paying attention to and engaging with content other social media users are posting. That also adds to the appeal, as it isn't a hard sell by the campaign for voters to endorse it on their Facebook page, but brilliant as there is a call to action.

The tweet itself is short, which makes it more retweetable, as users don't have to take any words out and there is ample room to add their own thoughts. The post has already been retweeted over 50 times from the campaign account alone.

The only way this could have been a better social media win? If the Obama campaign had tweeted a link to their (or a supporter's) Pinterest account, which would have shown a picture of one of the timeline covers and linked to the Tublr blog that gives a call to action to use the photos on Facebook.

Of course they would have to get a Pinterest account first. Surely someone is willing to send them an invitation to the skyrocketing social media network, which is the fastest growing website ever.
