On Saturday, President Obama bowed deeply to the Emperor and Empress of Japan. This was the President’s second day of his Asian tour, and it occurred just as they were walking in to have lunch in Tokyo. Many in the US have criticized the President for the bow, but Obama’s senior officials stated it was protocol. And the Emperor and Empress don’t appear to be shocked that he bowed.
During his Tokyo speech, President Obama reaffirmed the US alliance with Japan. He also called himself America's first Pacific President. Obama was born in Hawaii.
President Obama was criticized in April for bowing to Saudi King Abdullah at a G-20 meeting. Press Secretary Robert Gibbs stated that the President "bent over" to shake hands with the king, and that he did now bow.
