As President Barack Obama was giving his Rose Garden speech on Monday about his administration’s problematic rollout of Obamacare – the Affordable Care Act – a young pregnant woman with Type 1 diabetes appeared to be fainting. According to an NBC report on Monday, the president interrupted his own speech to assist the woman.
Reportedly, as Obama was about to conclude his comments at the event, At that point of the presentation, Obama was telling a story about a self-employed Pennsylvania man – John – who wrote to him saying that the web site really “stank” during the first week of its operation. As Obama continued talking about the man’s Obamacare experience, the fainting woman swayed a bit, closed her eyes, took a few deep breaths, and grabbed the hand of the woman who was standing next to her for physical support. As the woman struggled to stay on her feet, Obama turned to her and gave her support and said, “I got you. You’re OK.”
The woman is reported to be Karmel Allison, a San Diego resident. She was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was only a nine-year-old and has stayed on her same insurance coverage ever since as she feared she would not be able to find another plan that would take her on due to her pre-existing condition with the diabetes.
She is currently the science editor of ‘A Sweet Life,’ which is a blog about diabetes.
Following the incident, she was taken from the president’s event. There is not current update on her present condition.
