Oakwood University wins $50,000 Home Depot grant

Graduation won't be the only occasion to celebrate after The Home Depot announced Oakwood University won the top prize of $50,000 in the RETOOL YOUR SCHOOL Campus Improvement Program on Friday with over 33,000 votes.

Hundreds voted online daily for the duration of the contest from Feb. 18 - Apr. 15 to help the University secure the grant to cover the costs of building an outdoor pavilion, equipped with outdoor kitchen appliances, grills and fireplaces.

Students, parents, faculty, alumni, and friends in New York, Alabama, across the U.S., and around the globe generated buzz on and offline about the contest to ensure a win for Oakwood against the 66 other competitors. The University of Maryland Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, MD came in second place with a difference of nearly 6,000 votes.

RETOOL YOUR SCHOOL, now in its fourth year, awards grants to help Historically Black College and Universities (HBCUs) improve their campus and facilities.

Oakwood, which "puts God first - in pursuit of education, excellence, and eternity" was the only HBCU of the Seventh-day Adventist faith.
