Oakwood University competes for Retool Your School grand prize

Oakwood-Nation is in it to win Home Depot's Retool Your School contest, which was opened to the public on Feb. 18, for a $50,000 Tier I Grant. Students, alumni, faculty, parents, and friend of Oakwood University are voting daily to bring home the money.

Retool Your School is a campus improvement grant program created by The Home Depot in 2010 to help Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) improve their campus and facilities.

Oakwood University plans to build an outdoor pavilion, equipped with outdoor kitchen appliances, grills and fireplaces. The Tier II grant funds would cover the costs of re-seed and install sprinkler systems for the softball and football fields.

According to contest rules, Tier I and Tier II Grants will be awarded based on a ratio of consumer voting and advisory board panel selection. The application with the highest score will be awarded with the Tier I Grant ($50,000 level funding); twelve (12) subsequent applications will be awarded Tier II Grants ($10,000 level funding). This year’s Campus Pride Grant will award $25,000 to the school that has the most votes and social media activity, as assessed by The Home Depot.

Oakwood University, the only Seventh-day Adventist academic institution competing against 74 other schools for the top prize, is in second place after the University of Maryland Eastern Shore with more than 47,000 votes. If you're on Twitter or Instagram, you can use hashtag #OakwoodRYS2013 to help the school compete for the Campus Pride Grant.

The voting period ends on April 15. Winners will be announced by May 3.
