Oakland Live Music August 8 - 14

Outside Lands Music Festival isn’t the only good music happening this week in the Bay Area. You can stay in Oakland and catch a few good acts without having to deal with the masses at the BART station.

Monday – August 8 – a little laughter with your music

Hubba Bubba is a Monday night staple for The Uptown Lounge in Oakland. Each Monday an entertaining group gathers for a bit of cabaret, music and comedy. This Monday’s Hubba Bubba features Dixie DeLish, Stella Noir, Roxie Reve, Lady Brett, Cyanide Cyn, Ava Lanche, and The Dimestore Divas hosted by Lee Presson & Kingfish. Doors open at 9 p.m. with a $5 cover.

Tuesday – August 9 – get jazzed

The Eddie Pasternak Duo performs a free set starting at 6:30 p.m. at Café Rougein Berkeley. Jazz goes well with any dinner, especially one with a glass of wine, so treat yourself to some smooth sounds. Pasternak is a stunning guitarist who plays the bass lines and chords simultaneously. Watch the video of him performing with Dave Mathews and Roger Glen from Yoshi’s last year.

Wednesday – August 10 – music at lunchtime

Have you been to the Summer Sounds Concert at City Center yet? Each Wednesday you can enjoy free music on 13th and Broadway in downtown Oakland from Noon to 1 p.m. This week salsa band Pa’l Bailadortakes the Plaza Stage. Call 510.628.9170 for more info.

Thursday – August 11 –

Ashkenaz presents “Very Jerry: Acoustic and Electric Tribute to Garcia” on Thursday. The event features James Nash, Eric Thompson, David Gans and many more who regularly play Garcia’s music at Ashkenaz. The tribute was planned to celebrate Garcia’s long lasting music contributions. Doors open at 8 p.m. and the show begins at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $15.

Friday – August 12 – stay outside the festival

The three day madness that is Outside Lands Festival begins on Friday. Over the next three days Muse, Phish, The Black Keys, The Shins, The Original Meters, The Roots and many, many more will take the stage and perform for thousands upon thousands. If you don’t have a ticket (or want to skip the crowd) then stay in Oakland to get your groove on with Sol Americano at Starry Plough Pub. Also performing are Valerie Orth and The Consonance. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. and the show will start at 9:30 p.m.

Saturday – August 13 – too good to miss

STS9 is performing at Outside Land Festival but they are also doing a much smaller show at The Independent at 10 p.m. Should you be lucky enough to get a ticket to this sold out event then I strongly recommend it. STS9 knows how to melt the mind and seeing them in such a cozy venue should prove memorable. The Independent is having several Outside Lands themed concerts including Warren Haynes on Sunday, August 14.

Saturday – August 14 – two amazing ladies

Adele is certainly getting the recognition deserving of her talent and vocal ability. It is nice to see some of that respect shown to someone who helped pioneer the way for Adele and singers like her. Wanda Jackson may be a senior citizen but she’s still rocking and rolling. Jackson released an album this year, The Party Ain’t Over (produced by Jack White). Wanda Jackson opens for Adele at The Greek Amphitheatre in Berkeley on Saturday.
