48-year-old Oakland County oncologist Farid Fata pleaded not guilty Monday afternoon in federal court to one count of felony health care fraud. But he lost his fight over the bond amount and remains confined in the Wayne County Jail.
Fata’s lawyer had requested bail in the amount of $25,000, arguing that his client would not flee to his native Lebanon if released. At Fata’s 1:00 p.m. arraignment today, the judge bought the prosecution’s contention that Fata was a flight risk.
The court granted the prosecutor’s request to set the bond at a cool $9 million, which defense counsel had earlier stated his client was not able to pay.
The feds say that through this practice Fata bilked Medicare out of approximately $35 million.
Fata was arrested August 6 at his Oakland Township home and several offices were raided.
If convicted as charged, Fata could spend 5-10 years behind bars, life if a victim died as a result of his actions.
Fata became a naturalized citizen in 2009. If he committed fraudulent activities before that date, he faces deportation.
