The Oakland Athletics beat the Minnesota Twins 9-1 on Saturday (Sept. 21) to move one step closer to an American League West title. According to ESPN, the magic number for the team is now just one game. This means one more win by the Athletics or one Texas Rangers loss and the A's have clinched another division title.
Last year, the A's caught the Rangers on the last day of the regular season, capturing the AL West title and avoiding the wild card play-in game. Now it seems that the A's have done it again, making up a lot of ground in the second half of the 2013 MLB season to overtake the Rangers. Heading into Sunday (Sept. 22), the Rangers aren't even in a wild card slot any longer.
The Athletics now hold an impressive 92-63 record on the season and have a seemingly easy route to the postseason. After finishing up against the Twins on Sunday, they have three games against the Los Angeles Angels and then three against the Seattle Mariners to wrap up the season. Currently the team has the second best record in the AL, with the Detroit Tigers (91-64) one game back and the Boston Red Sox (94-62) one game up.
Sunday could be the day when the Oakland Athletics get to celebrate another postseason qualification and now the team looks good enough to contend for another World Series title. That game on Sunday is at 1:05 p.m. PT and it's being played at home.
