Manny Ramirez told ESPN's Pedro Gomez that he has agreed to a one-year contract reportedly worth $500,000 with the Oakland Athletics.
The 39-year old outfielder had violated the league's banned substances policy for the second time last season, which earned him a 100-game suspension. He chose to retire instead of serving the suspension. Upon his return to baseball, he reached an agreement with Major League Baseball to have the suspension lowered to 50 games.
Throughout his career, Ramirez established himself as one of the best sluggers in the game. In 19 seasons, he has hit 555 home runs, driven in 1839 runs, and batted .312. He finished in the top ten in the MVP voting nine times and has played in the postseason 11 times with three different teams, winning a pair of world championships with the Boston Red Sox in 2004 and 2007. His 29 career postseason home runs are the most in history.
