The Oakland Athletics are very interested in free agent slugger Manny Ramirez, who is attempting a return to Major League Baseball following an abrupt retirement in the beginning of the 2011 season.
Ramirez had violated the league's banned substances policy for the second time, which earned him a 100-game suspension. He chose to retire instead of serving the suspension. He is now planning to return to baseball and reached an agreement with Major League Baseball to have the suspension lowered to 50 games.
Ramirez has been working out in Miami and is drawing attention from a number of teams, including the Athletics, Baltimore Orioles and the Toronto Blue Jays.
Throughout his career, Ramirez established himself as one of the best sluggers in the game. In 19 seasons, he has hit 555 home runs, driven in 1839 runs, and batted .312. He finished in the top ten in the MVP voting nine times and has played in the postseason 11 times with three different teams, winning a pair of world championships with the Boston Red Sox in 2004 and 2007. His 29 career postseason home runs are the most in history.
