Oakl'art Lovers are always "up" to get out on that first Friday evening of each month, to explore the creative side of 'Townishness. But then, that Friday night action kicks off an entire weekend of rubbing elbows with our awesome homies and homegirls, neighbors and friends. So what if the Raiders didn't make it to the SuperBowl? We can still enjoy the game at our homes or seated at one of our fine eating and drinking establishments, if you get my drift. But instead of being glued to the boob tube, consuming mass quantities of carbs and unsaturated fats, we here in Oakland can also get out and about! And enjoy the Oak'mosphere! Parks! Lakes, Trails! Live the life you love, 'Townsfolk! and love the life you live!

Manna Gallery
is pleased to present artworks using collage and assemblage techniques by Elaine Maute, and a continuing series of new works by Linn Thygeson. Elaine Maute's newest work incorporates the trappings of our lives (threads, edges of paintings, candy wrappers, small shiny things) using the detritus of daily life in the tradition of Kurt Schwitters and Richard Tuttle. Linn Thygeson uses landscape, space, and overlapping planes in her ongoing series of new paintings. Although often abstract, her work usually contains references to the open vastness of the prairie landscape.
Come meet the artists for a reception on Saturday, February 4, from 3 to 6 pm., when they will talk about the development of their latest work. Gallery hours are Friday and Saturday, 1 to 6 pm, First Fridays 5 to 9 pm and by appointment.
Chandra Cerrito ContemporaryFebruary 3, 2012– March 30, 2012 Opening Reception February 3, 6 - 9 pm
Shifflet’s paintings envision an internal refuge that reflects the wonder of the natural world. At once ethereal and organic, her dreamlike, fantastic images connote arrested movement within light-imbued atmospheres or mysterious under-water realms. Their inferred spaciousness, drama of light and shadow and hints of botanical forms, clouds and water ripples reflect the artist’s inspirations--the garden surrounding her studio and childhood memories of imaginative play in the forest. A delight in nature, attentiveness to her surroundings and depiction of constant flux echo Shifflet’s Buddhist perspective that “the ineffable beauty of life is held within a profound fragility of impermanence.”
Mercury 20is pleased to present "Interlocking Terrain," a group show of work by gallery artists, curated by artist Charlie Milgrim. This show explores connections and juxtapositions between man-made and natural environments and their relationships to inner geographies.
Studio QuercusFebruary 3rd 6–9pm
Studio Quercus is pleased to present In the Ring, an unusual gallery exhibit featuring historical boxing photographs from the collection of the late Duke Cahill. Old film footage from legendary bouts and installations produced by the Studio Quercus crew will complement the Cahill photos.
Boxing is not a subject frequently celebrated in the art world, but the Cahill collection presented a unique opportunity. Cahill (1920-2003), a boxer and a celebrated folk artist, bridged the two worlds. He was a colorful character who fought as a light heavyweight, traveled the South Pacific as a merchant marine, became a restaurateur, and ran his own construction company.
The collection of photos, from the first half of the 20th century,

Johansson Projects
Artist Reception: Friday, February 3, 5-8pm
Johansson Projects is pleased to present Follies of the Digital Arcade, Christina Corfield's recently uncovered archives of the mysterious effects of electricity on the visual imagination of the late nineteenth century and it’s impact on today’s digital age.
Western society of the late nineteenth century moved from a mechanical to an electrical age, and now we too are living through huge shifts in technologies and communications. Follies of the Digital Arcade draws attention to the idea that wonder is an important factor in the creation of belief systems. The Body Electric, a two channel video installation, presents the story of Lucille, a vaudeville showgirl turned telegraph operator – forced to surrender her dreams of visiting “The White City” in Chicago for the responsibilities of a work-a-day life when she goes blind. Little does she know that one day she will receive a message that will change her life!
To supplement this installation, Corfield’s illustrations show us a variety of phenomenon demonstrating the many manifestations of electricity's aftershock; from cautionary tales of social decay in The Ills of the Ether, which show a variety of side effects ranging from listlessness in men to hysteria in women, to unbelievable events triggered by the onset of the new electric age and accordingly depicted through Eyewitness Testimonies. These documentations make up in aesthetics what they lack in accuracy, and like the mysterious force they attempt to describe, the images themselves are really quite hypnotizing.
