O's add more power, sign OF Cruz

The Baltimore Orioles made yet another significant move, signing outfielder Nelson Cruz to a one-year contract worth $8 million.

The signing of Cruz means the Orioles will forfeit their second-round pick in the June draft, which means the team won't have a selection until the third round.

While the terms are certainly very reasonable given Cruz was looking for four-years, $75 million at the start of free agency, getting just one-year out of a guy who can't play the field at all and giving up a high draft pick seems a bit curious.

The team seemed to be debating back and forth whether they wanted to sign Cruz or Kendrys Morales to be their full-time designated hitter.

Cruz is coming off a suspension for performance-enhancing drugs, which is a pretty big red flag. He also is coming from Texas, a great ballpark in a great environment for power hitters.

He isn't expected to be play in the field much at all, as he is a train-wreck defensively, and he doesn't help the team's on-base percentage problem. He simply adds a more reliable right-handed bat to the lineup and additional home runs, something that is the least of the team's problems.

He's also several years older than Morales, and always seems to miss more than a month with some type of injury.

Morales has great career numbers of Camden Yards, played in a pitcher's ballpark last year and would have given the team some insurance in case something happened to Chris Davis.

Morales also would give the Orioles an option at designated hitter from the left-side of the plate. Other than Henry Urrutia, the team doesn't have any options against right-handed pitching. There are already a ton of options against left-handed pitching, from Nolan Reimold to Delmon Young to even Steve Pearce.
