It may have only been the second preseason game, but the top line for the Colorado Avalanche looked to be in midseason form Friday night. The dynamic duo of Matt Duchene and Ryan O’Reilly led the way with three points apiece, as the Avs skated by the Los Angeles Kings for a 4-3 overtime victory.
The game started quickly, as both teams scored in the opening minute of the contest. Andre Benoit got the scoring started with a wrist shot from the point just 26 seconds in to stake the Avalanche to an early lead. The Kings answered just 25 seconds later when Justin Williams beat goaltender Sami Aittokallio on the powerplay.
Less than three minutes later, the Kings took the lead when Denver native Nick Shore beat Aittokallio with a wrist shot.
The real fireworks however, did not begin until the third period.
O’Reilly put in his own rebound to tie the game halfway through the third to send the game into overtime.
A penalty near the end of regulation put the Avalanche on the penalty kill to begin the extra frame. A turnover proved costly for the Kings, as Nick Holden found O’Reilly along the boards. O’Reilly then fought off a defender, cut to the net and spun before putting the puck in the back of the net to clinch the victory.
"That looked like a Peter [Forsberg] move for sure," said head coach Patrick Roy.
The Avalanche will be back in action Sunday when they take on the Anaheim Ducks.
