O.J. Simpson and co-defendant, Clarence Stewart, appeared in Nevada Supreme Court petitioning to be released on bail pending their recent appeal. Simpson is currently serving a 33 year sentence without the possibility of parole for 9 years. He was convicted of 12 counts of robbery, kidnapping and weapons charges on October 3, 2008. Simpson and Stewart were found guilty of using violence and force to retrieve sports memorabilia on September 13, 2007 from the Palace Station Hotel and Casino.
Simpson’s attorneys feel District Court Judge Jackie Glass committed serious errors during the trial that were "so egregious and prejudicial that the defense could not get a fair trial.” His attorneys filed an appeal on May 28, 2009 and today they requested bail pending the outcome of that appeal.
The Supreme Court ruled that Simpson is denied bail because he was “convicted of serious nonprobationable violent offenses, committed with the use of a firearm” and that bail was not justifiable in this situation. Judge Glass had originally denied bail because they were facing mandatory charges and were possibly a flight risk. The Supreme Court agreed as well.
