O'Brien Ottawa bound

The Ottawa Senators today recalled forward Jim O’Brien from the club’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Binghamton Senators.

The recall is the 23-year-old O’Brien’s first of the 2011-12 campaign. In six National Hockey League games with Ottawa last season, he recorded no points, two penalty minutes and 11 shots on goal.

O’Brien has scored seven goals while adding seven assists and 10 penalty minutes in 27 games with the B-Sens this season. O’Brien returned to Binghamton’s lineup on Jan. 7 after missing 19 games with an injury suffered in November. Following his return, he has scored five goals and eight points in eight games.

In five games prior to the All-Star break, O'Brien scored three goals, all of them game-winners and two of those were shorthanded.

O'Brien worked extremely hard to get back on the ice after his injury and despite a slow start, he has obviously gotten himself going again.  Very rarely, do I add my own thoughts on a player when they are involved in a roster move, but Jim O'Brien is a rare-breed of athlete in this day-and-age.

He is the type of player media people like to speak with.  He is not one to hurry the process along and he'll answer every questions with the same attention to detail he has on the ice.  I am glad to see Ottawa give him the call he deserves.
