For his fall and winter 2013 collection, Dominican designer Hernan Lander says he was inspired by Mother Nature in an earth-tone palette of chocolate brown, slate gray, and midnight black. From a shearling vest to a body-con peekaboo dress, Lander remixed these hues in the textures and tones of his designs. Than celebrity makeup artist Tina Turnbow for NYX Cosmetics drew inspiration from this color palette by creating a matte complexion that draws attention to the eyes.
To create the superstar look, Turnbow began with NYX Stay Matte But Not Flat Powder Foundation to mattify the models’ faces. “We’re doing really matte, even skin to create a canvas for the eyes, which are little pieces of artwork,” said Turnbow. She created a sharp contrast to the matte skin by applying the NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Slate across the eyelid to the brow bone. Then she employed the NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Dark Brown to layer and mix the warm and cool tones seen in Lander’s collection.
She next applied the NYX Single Eye Shadow in Charcoal Brown and Dark Brown on top of the liner and smudged the shadows past the brow bone and below the eyelid. The NYX Cream Shadow in Gunmetal was then used to create a cool gray tone that filled the entire eyelid.
She rolled NYX Roll On Eye Shimmer in on top of the powdered shadows and creamy pencils to make the eyes look like jewels. The NYX Collection Noir Kohl Kajal Black Liner and Collection Chocolaté Kohl Kajal Brown Liner were then applied on the eyelid and bottom water line to keep full focus on the eyes.
Turnbow then used the NYX Wonder Pencil (this writer’s favorite concealer) on the brow arch extending outward to conceal the brows. For the lips, Turnbow kept the look simple to not take away from the intense eye makeup, applying the NYX Wonder Pencil for a nude and matte finish on the lips.
Her grand finale was a flourish of NYX Studio Finishing Powder to keep the makeup in place, and a few coats of NYX Doll Eye Mascara to darken and extend the lashes. The finished look was a vibrant eye in earthy tones contrasted with a matte face and lip.
