According to Mail Online, September 22, 2013, the New York Police Department has issued a flyer recommending that people upgrade their devices to iOS7 because, as they see it, it is "safer" than other systems. Not only did NYPD urge citizens to upgrade their systems to iOS7, but they also urged people to upgrade for 'added security' for their devices.

The NYPD urged citizens to register their devices with their own 'Operation identification Program'. The NYPD reassured people that their system is good because it includes an Anti-theft activation lock that requires an Apple ID and password before it can be activated.

The NYPD also promised citizens that the new system promotes fingerprint identification in a further effort to prevent theft.

For a police agency to get this involved in the promotion of subsidiary technical devices is rare; although the high-profile involvement of the NYPD in this matter is reflective of the extent to which device theft has become a concern to all police and government agencies nationwide, or, at the very least, New York City.
