According to an August 28 article in AP News; the New York Police Department has classified mosques as terrorism organizations. The classification allows them to tape sermons, spy on imams, and perform surveillance on anyone who attends worship services at a mosque. The article goes on to say that the NYPD felt that the measures were necessary to keep the city safe.
The Patriot Act was signed into law by President George W. Bush, according to Wikipedia. The Act was designed to give law enforcement agencies broader latitude when dealing with the threat of terrorism. The Act allows for wiretapping and other methods to prevent domestic terrorism.
Critics of the NYPD viewed the decision as a move that preys on the fears as prejudices of Americans.
“Given the spiritual climate in the world, how do you differentiate a mosque from a church like Westboro? We have a church that spews hatred and we decide it best to chase a stereotype versus a known threat to civil society? It makes no sense at all to me.”
According to the Holy Bible, a brother is defined as one who does the will of God. In fact, the Bible often speaks of (good) deeds that cross spiritual and economic lines. The “Good Samaritan” is an example of someone who put need ahead and above anything.
Since 9/11, the New York Police Department has opened at least 12 terrorism investigations.
