NYFW Day 2: Lincoln Center streetstyle and trends, ELEVEN exhibit

Lincoln Center was buzzing yesterday with the first full schedule of runway shows and presentations. The room swirled with people at different ends of the fashion industry hierarchy. Photographers circled like sharks outside and in. Bloggers and journalists crowded the media pit, uploading the stories.

Past the central area, accessory designers like Circa and Bodhi Handbags showcased precious gold clutches, andmetallic leather bags respectively. Bodhi is showing at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week for the first time with their fall/winter 2011 collection. their creative/design director, Joseph Janus has made sure to offer items that men and women will swoon over, from duffelbags to iPad covers.

Streetstyle of the fashion set ranged from relaxed to high maintenance, but a certain trend seems to be in action: leopardskin prints. From thrift store style overcoats, to jackets, to footwear- the spots were everywhere. A short jacket was worn with a flowing shirt, leather leggings, aviator sunglasses, and a fringed bag. The leopard lent a rockstar raffishness to the wearer, very Keith Richards.

A variation was a leopard print scarf primly wound round the neck of a woman wearing a gorgeous white princess line coat, acting as a hint of naughtiness. A military-hued olive coat and bag were offset by a skyscraper tall pair of leopardskin heels and pale tights in the same pattern, to stunning effect.

Offsite, Photographer Phillip-lorca diCorcia was at David Zwirner Gallery last night to speak about his work and his
new book of images. The book, titled ELEVEN, is a collection of editorial stories previously published in W magazine. Mr. diCorcia led a group of journalists around the room, pointing out particular photographs and speaking of the inspiration and process that created them. He said that with all of the changes in editorial publishing, he wanted to get the work out there before people thought "that W was just another letter in the alphabet".

The work was stunning, allegorical, and wonderfully expressive, inspired by artists like Jan Vermeer and Goya, lighting is as central to the beauty of the work as the models or stylists. Both Mr. diCorcia and former W creative director Dennis Freedman  (who worked closely together to produce the editorials) mentioned that work of this nature is no longer supported in the industry. Advertisers just want to see the clothes, not the richly informative 'illusions' created by talented visionaries.

When asked if he preferred working with models or actors, Mr. diCorcia replied, "They all need coaching".

ELEVEN will be on view at the David Zwirner Gallery until March 5th, 2011. Mr. diCorcia will be signing copies of the
book at the gallery on Saturday, February 12th from 4pm to 6pm.

Designers showing on day 3 of Mercedes Benz Fashion week include Rebecca Minkoff, Nicole Miller, and Cynthia Rowley. You can check which designers are livestreaming at http://www.mbfashionweek.com/schedule/fall_2011/february_11_2011
