New York City organization, Hearts & Minds is spearheading a call to action under the banner of the End Poverty Campaign, a plan to help end extreme global poverty more quickly and cost effectively.
The group works to do this while also promoting more effective democracy. Its grassroots public education and advocacy raises support for comprehensive, expanded programs, including proven techniques such as free and fair trade, sustainable agriculture, social entrepreneurship and microfinance.
Thanks to donated goods and services, Hearts & Minds accomplishes more than $9 of service for every dollar spent. In the past, they have done events including potlucks and motivation events for both young and older people, with more planned in the future.
Already, the organization is adding direct service to still-devastated Haiti, social media contests and other promotions to bring awareness to the cause.
Founded in 1996, Hearts & Minds is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization. President of the organization, Bill Blackman, and his group of volunteers work locally, nationwide and globally through the website www.change.net. There, the organization also promotes volunteering and self-help for a wide range of issues. The website also garners millions of visitors a year.
