NYC Mercedes-Benz 2012 Fashion Week held at the Lincoln Center started with a big bang as models strutted along the catwalk to designs by Nicholas K and to Mary Sinatra’s song “Bang Bang” wearing cowboy hats and western inspired designs. Nicholas K layered fabrics by mixing sweaters and hoodies with jackets, scarves with pants, skirts and dresses.
The latest collection from BCBG Max Azria is a burst of color here and there with color-blocking to spice ups its elongated proportions and geometric shapes done in fluid silk chiffon shirt dresses. Bold color combos in black and orange, merlot and blush were intensified with textural plays like sheer insets and clever pleating.
The show also featured outerwear on the runway with gorilla-armed coats and multi-color fur vests, canvas and leather trenches. Accessories included open-toe ankle-strap sandals and bags with contrasting textures like snake and suede.
Designer Juan Carlos Obando, whose fuchsia halter dress has recently been worn by Oscar Nominee, Viola Davis, to the Oscar nominee’s luncheon, showed styles similar to his previous work. On the runway, there were bias-cut, silk chiffon dresses in chartreuse, peony pink and orange crush with asymmetrical or fishtail hems adding a twist to the silhouettes. Obando soaked the floral crystal embroidery on his jackets and satin dresses in vinegar to give it a distressed look, then he ripped it apart and sewed it back to create an imperfect detail.
