Authorities in N.Y. revealed on Jan. 3 that 35-year-old Barry Baldwin of Brooklyn was arraigned on Monday in connection with assaulting five Jewish women in “knockout game” fashion.
According to The Daily News, Baldwin was originally charged with hate crimes because he targeted only Jewish victims. The hate crime charges were later downgraded, with no explanation as to why the charges were downgraded.
The NYPD released a sketch of the knockout game suspect on Christmas Eve.
“Everyone will sleep a little easier,” said Assemblyman Dov Hikind, who has been warning the community about the menace.
The N.Y. man was charged with five assaults on the Jewish women, whom he “viciously punched for no apparent reason.”
Baldwin was arrested last week, and has been connected to six separate incidents of assaulting Jewish female victims. At his arraignment, he was charged with five assaults – none of them categorized as a hate crime.
Baldwin confessed to five of the assaults, one in Nov. and four in Dec.
According to gothamist, one of Baldwin’s knockout victims included a 78-year-old woman, and another female victim who was walking with her 7-year-old daughgter.
The NYPD said that Baldwin apparently sucker punched his unsuspecting female victims at random. He did not provide any reason as to why he assaulted only Jewish women.
Barry Baldwin is being held by the NYPD on $10,000 bail.
