NYAFF 2010 Review: Kung Fu Chefs

Kung Fu ChefsKFC now stands for KUNG FU CHEFS!

Martial arts master, Sammo Hung, shows his love for Kung Fu AND Chinese Cuisine this time around. There hasn't been a flick in which cooking and fighting had been this much fun since Stephen Chow's, "The God of Cookery". Hung plays a village chief and top chef, named Master Yee, who possesses the legendary Dragon Blade. His status was upstaged when a fellow villager framed him for poisoning the villagers at a lavish banquet. Master Yee was ousted from the village and he spent the rest of the film trying to prove his innocence and redeem himself.

He landed a job at a lavish Chinese restaurant by challenging its top chef.  However, Master Yee is not alone in seeking employment. A young, cocky upstart, Ken'ichi (played by Vanness Wu, formerly of the Taiwanese boy band, F4) is a recent grad from the local martial arts dojo. Not only Ken'ichi can fight, he also inherited the fine art of cooking, just like the Shaolin Monks did.  Master Yee decides to take on Ken'ichi as an apprentice. The two set off on an epic journey of martial art and ancient Chinese cooking techniques. The duo also battles a rival restaurant for top prize and glory.

The most amazing thing about this film is it teaches you actual cooking techniques. There are many ways to slice, cut and julienne veggies. In one scene, Master Yee shows Ken'ichi how to make scrambled eggs into a delicious, tender, moist and multi-layered eating experience. "Cabbage in Clear Broth", may be a peasant dish, but it's the food of the Gods.

In this film you'll get to see:

    * Sammo Hung slicing a whole pig, then beat the crap out of a character played by his real life son, Timmy.
    * Vanness Wu looking like Dave Navarro, minus the tattoos and piercings.
    *Ai Kago from the Japanese all girl pop troupe, Morning Musume, talking in Cantonese!
    * FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD!

Food Critics and Gourmands will also love this film.

    * Martha Stewart - She will be mighty impressed at the blade sharpening skills of Ken'ichi.
    * Anthony Bourdain - He will salivate at the adventurous cuisine with a no holds barred attitiude.
    * Eric Ripert - The Frenchman will be so pleased to see importance of sauces and how it enchances the dish's taste.
    * Mark Dacascos - The Chairman of Iron Chef America will be so pleased at the martial arts skills being used during cooking and fighting.
    * Iron Chef Chinese Chen Kenichi - He'll be envious.

FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT TO DINE!
