The New York Yankees have officially traded starting pitcher A.J. Burnett to the Pittsburgh Pirates for two minor league players, according to a report on ESPN.com.
The deal needed to be approved by the commissioner and Burnett had to pass a physical before it could become official.
The Pirates will pay $13.9 million of the $31.1 million remaining on Burnett's contract, which expires after the 2013 season. They will receive minor league players Diego Moreno and Exicardo Cayones in the trade.
Burnett, 35, won just 34 of 69 decisions and posted a disappointing 4.79 earned run average in his three seasons with the Yankees. He also hurled 58 wild pitches, including a league-leading 17 in 2009 and 25 in 2011.
Throughout his major league career, he has pitched for three different teams: Florida Marlins (1999-2006), Toronto Blue Jays (2006-2008), and New York Yankees (2009-2011). The Pirates will become his fourth team.
He has a career record of 121-111 and a 4.10 ERA, plus 1791 strikeouts in 1960.1 innings pitched.
