NY Wegmans prepared foods departments caught in expanding hard-boiled egg recall

The long arms of the Michael Foods Inc. national hard-boiled egg recall reached into central New York on February 2. Late Thursday night, Rochester-based Wegmans supermarkets announced its own recall of hard-boiled eggs, salad bar and deli items sold in stores in Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo, Hornell, Elmira and Corning. The hard-boiled eggs were sold or used by Wegmans in prepared foods from Jan. 23 – Feb. 1, 2012, and came from eggs produced by Michael Foods.

Michael Foods Inc., based in Minnesota, began on January 26 to voluntarily recall batches of hard-boiled eggs produced at its Wakefield, Nebraska plant. The recalled eggs may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. In the days following the Michael Foods recall announcement, stores that made prepared foods from the contaminated eggs issued their own specific recalls. Wegmans' announcement helped increase the scope of the recall to 34 states, including New York.
