NY System Hot Weiners "All-the-Way"

Ever had a hot weiner? If you have, you'll know that Rhode Island's New York System's hot weiner sauce is made from a top secret recipe, heavily guarded by the families that created them. Learn how to make hot weiners that rival the best Rhode Island has to offer.

As far as Rhode Island regional cuisine goes, hot weiners are probably the most famous fast food delicacy there is. I might go so far to say, the humble hot weiner is even more popular than pizza strips, coffee milk and Dell's Lemonade combined. See Part 1 of my article, "Ever Had a Hot Weiner?" to understand what a hot weiner really is.  I'm not a weiner know-it-all by any means, but I do know a thing or two about these mysterious things we call gaggers and belly-bustahs.

Make Your Own Hot Weiner Sauce

Hot weiner sauce is perhaps the best kept, top secret recipe in the state of RI, maybe in the entire country. Weiner joints all over the state have tried to imitate each others' sauce, all claiming to have "The Best Weiner Sauce" in all of Rhode Island. I've had my share of weiners, and they're all so similar, and yet totally unique no matter which weiner joint you eat at! Everyone says it's the sauce that makes the weiner. I couldn't agree more!

You can try making your own sauce from scratch, but you'd first have to figure out all the secret spices that make a hot weiner a real hot weiner! Just to prove that all weiner sauces were not created equal, Quahog.org has a number of different recipes for you to try. Or, you could buy the Olneyville New York System "authentic" hot weiner sauce spice mix, and follow their recipe to mix in with the hamburger. Their website has a whole list of grocery stores that they distribute to, including stores like Dave's Marketplace, Shaw's & all Stop & Shop, as well as many others around the state.

If you thought only carnivores could enjoy the taste of a real hot weiner, here's a vegetarian hot weiner sauce! I don't know about you, but that just doesn't seem right for some reason! Must be a Rhode Island thing............

Donna, I've said it before, I'll say it again, I LOVE reading your page!!

And, I've got a request/mission for you. I've been able to recreate almost all of my favorite RI foods at home (in Florida), excpet for the pizza strip sauce.

Do you know any bakeries willing to give up the recipe for pizza strips? And I'm talkin' exact brands of tomatoes, quantities (even if it's 50 gallons), etc., down to the last detail. Dish, dish!

I was a California boy who came to Brown in 1966 and learned to love those New York System weiners. A group of us would go to the New York System on Smith Hill every night and have 4 weiners with everything and a glass of coke. "Pops" who served us would line 16 weiners up his arm and load them up. We always thought that the top ones, up close to the armpit had a little extra flavor and they were the most sought after ones. I have fond memories of the "weinie team" and that great food.

I haven't had a hot weiner in RI for over 25 years and I can STILL remember the taste like it's yesterday. Time for a road trip.
