The Proof
In 1997, George Dawes Green founded The Moth, a storytelling organization that gives the opportunity for skilled creators and amateurs alike to share something personal. Today, followers and onlookers know The Moth’s shows by the line that extends around the block prior to doors opening – at each of its rotating venues.
But fans aren’t just flocking to The Moth. In the last decade, regularly running shows have popped up at Upright Citizens Brigade, The PIT, 92Y Tribeca, Joe’s Pub, Comix, The Creek and the Cave – you name a hopping place and there is now at least one storytelling show on its calendar.
The Pull
Honest, intimate, no frills entertainment is as refreshing as catching up with an old friend. In an age where technology steers us clear of human interaction, storytelling hits the spot.
It can get intense and hilarious. For RISK!, now at 92Y Tribeca, the storytelling stakes are high, and Stripped Stories (at UCB) designates a safe space to hear what happens behind closed doors. It’s not unusual to hear a cathartic laugh or sniffle. These events unite performer and audience member in a rare manner that involves vulnerability and shared emotions.
The Performances
The Moth*
Throw your name in the hat to tell a story (as long as it adheres to the predetermined theme). Or just watch the fun.
RISK!*
Hosted by Kevin Allison of “The State”, guests have included Janeane Garofalo, Michael Showalter, Leo Allen, Elna Baker…all confessing something.
The Liar Show
Andy Christie’s got some truth tellers, but a few of ‘em are lying. Guess which ones are and win a t-shirt!
Stripped Stories
Margot Leitman, Giulia Rozzi and guests talk about doing the nasty (or not). Audience participation encouraged.
Stories at the Creek
Cyndi Freeman, Brad Lawrence and their impeccable line up share tales. So does a mystery guest.
