NWSL allocates 50 women's national team players to teams

Friday, the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) released its allocation of Canadian, U.S. and Mexican national team players to its nine teams for the 2014 NWSL season.

That list includes 26 Americans, 16 Canadians and eight Mexicans for a total of 50 national team players spread throughout the league.

The NWSL, entering only its second season, is supported by the Canadian Soccer Association, Federation of Mexican Football and the United States Soccer Federation to strengthen their national teams for international competition. Each national federation subsidizes the NWSL salaries of their players.

Expansion Houston Dash is the newest NWSL team, beginning its inaugural season in 2014.

This season, there are 11 newly allocated players, including five Americans (Yael Averbuch, Stephanie Cox, Whitney Engen, Meghan Klingenberg and Christen Press), four Canadians (Jonelle Filigno, Rachel Quon, Chelsea Stewart and Melissa Tancredi) and two Mexicans (Jackie Acevedo and Arianna Romero).

From Jan. 3-6, the NWSL will hold a "trade period" for all NWSL teams to make trades throughout the four days. However, teams will not be allowed to waive players currently on their roster until after the NWSL Expansion Draft.
