Nutty Boats

The fall harvest is a very busy time. You will see the farmers and gardeners collecting and preserving their crops and gardens. People will be saving hay, corn, tomatoes, walnuts and much more! If you have an apple or walnut tree in your yard or at the nearby park, you may have noticed that the apples and walnuts have begun to fall right off of the trees!

Many people will spend time cleaning up fallen apples, leaves and walnuts. Why not have fun with the fall harvest by creating fun craft projects?

To make your own nutty boat, you will need to collect a few items from the yard or park.

You will need:

  • Walnut shell
  • Leaf
  • Stick
  • Clay or playdoh

To make your boat:

  • You will break a walnut in half. This is not an easy job! Please have an adult helper to help you break the nut in half. Each half of the walnut may become a boat!
  • "Thread a leaf onto a twig for a mast and a sail." (LGS)
  • "Hold the mast to the inside of the shell with a small ball of clay."(LGS)

You will now have your very own boat. This is a fun craft to play with in a water table or even the bath if Mom and Dad say it is okay!
