Nuts have suffered a stigma of having high calories and high fat; however, the benefits of consuming four to five servings per week (a serving size of nuts is about 1/3 cup) beat any concerns. While nuts may be high in calories (around 160--200 calories per ounce), they are also naturally low in sodium, contain no trans-fats or cholesterol, and are a good source of fiber and protein. A low sugar content also makes them a healthy choice for diabetics. Nuts are rich in good fats like omega-6 fatty acids (walnuts are also rich in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids) and monounsaturated fatty acids, both of which have been found to improve cardiovascular health by lowering LDL or bad cholesterol. Nuts are also full of powerful antioxidants, which may contribute to their cardio-protective effects by slowing the development of atherosclerosis, essential B vitamins and minerals, including magnesium, calcium, and potassium, which are all important for regulating blood pressure and have been associated with a lower risk of stroke. So, grab a handful!

Yogi Bhajan, the founder of the Yogi company, has a few but strong principals. Taste is essential but one also has to feel great after eating. The products have to work well with body and mind. Health is found in nature – Yogi company has kitchens, not laboratories. Creative combinations come from nature itself. Whenever possible, work with wholes, not parts.

As a result of that, Yogi offers a wide variety of teas as well as cereal and granola crisps. Granola Crisps are a true delicious snack that comes in strawberry, blueberry, or baked cinnamon flavors. This healthy and very tasty snack contains among other great things oats, barley, spelt (ancient and more nutritious version of wheat), quinoa, and amaranth. If it sounds like you will be biting into a cardboard box, do not worry. This is one of the best healthy granolas out there. Give it a try! You can find this product in any Wal-Mart in the cereal section.

Raw honey is an anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal substance. Studies have shown that treating colds and coughs with honey had better and faster results then over the counter medicines. Raw honey is the healthiest choice amongst the various forms of honey as it has the most nutritional value and contains amylase, an enzyme concentrated in flower pollen which helps predigest starchy foods like breads. Put it in your hot tea or spread it on a piece of bread for the afternoon pick me up. Raw honey is available in the Fresh Market on Trenholm Plaza.
