Nutritional benefits of diet soda do not exist

While some soft drink manufacturers have added a few vitamins to diet and other sodas, is there any nutritional benefit in the diet soda products on the market?

According to reports, those drinking diet soda often tend to gain weight. The following details are from one study that suggests why this would happen:

“Research shows that sweet taste can increase appetite and the regular consumption of the high intensity sweetness of artificial sweeteners may encourage sugar cravings and dependence,” says CNN diet and fitness expert Dr. Melina Jampolis.

Information in the above report shows the FDA has approved several artificial sweeteners. The list of approved artificial sweeteners includes aspartame, which some will find in many products including Equal and NutraSweet. Saccharin, sucralose, and acesulfame potassium are also on the list.

While the discussion between manufacturers and promoters of artificial sweeteners and those in healthcare industry may never be settled, consumers need to be aware of the concerns. Because there is no nutritional advantage to drinking chemically sweetened beverages and no additional nutrition is received by eating artificially sweetened foods, perhaps these should at least be limited, if not eliminated.
