Nut or legume: Celebrate National Peanut Butter Day

Peanut butter is a high protein and fiber food source. Although peanut butter is high in calories and fat it is actually good for you. The combination of nutrients in peanut butter is healthy and contains the better fats, monounsaturated, that our bodies pull natural sugar and energy from the peanut spread and is cholesterol free.

In 1890 peanut butter was created as a cure for bad teeth by a doctor in St. Louis. His patients were pleased with his creation and cure which became quite popular. There was one drawback that made its use a little uncomfortable since the oils from the peanuts separated from the grainy solids of the peanuts.

Since then every year on January 24 everyone celebrates “National Peanut Butter Day”!

It wasn’t until 1933 when a California packer developed a way to homogenize the peanuts. This process turned the peanuts into a spreadable butter we know today as peanut butter.

Nut or legume:

Botanists refer to a peanut as a legume.

Culinary specialists refer to a peanut as a nut.

How many peanuts are needed to produce a 12 ounce jar of peanut butter?

550 peanuts – now that’s nuts but a true fact!

What causes peanut butter to stick to the roof of your mouth?

The high protein in the peanuts!

How old should you be before eating peanut butter?

It is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics to wait feeling peanut butter to children until they are at least 3 years old. The reason for this is that the consistency can become a choking hazard for little ones and it also helps prevent an early onset of a peanut allergy.

Bake something with peanut butter today or slap together a (PJB) peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Have a happy and sticky – “National Peanut Butter Day”!
