In a massive grass-roots effort to honor both the profession of nursing and Sally Bixby, the first registered nurse to serve as president of the Tournament of Roses, nurses and nursing organizations raised funds to enter a float in the 2013 Rose Parade. They raised more than $400,000.00 and are now endowing the Nurses’ Float Scholarship Fund.
In an emailed press release Wednesday morning, Bare Root, Inc. announced that it will use the funds remaining from the effort to establish an endowed scholarship for registered nurses pursuing a higher degree.
“It gives us great joy to be able to continue to pay it forward by creating a scholarship with remaining funds that were so generously donated by our friends and peers across the country who supported The Nurses’ Float,” said Monica Weisbrich, RN, President of Bare Root. “We believe that ACNL is committed to promoting education and truly champions the advancement of quality health care and practice, it was a perfect fit to work with them to make this scholarship fund a reality.”

The $5,000 scholarship, which will be awarded through the Association of California Nurse Leaders (ACNL), will be given to an RN pursuing either an ADN to BSN or BSN to MSN degree. Nurses interested in applying for the Nurses’ Float Scholarship may visit www.acnl.org for more details. Applications are available through Nov. 22, 2013. Applicants do not need to be a resident of California or member of ACNL to apply.
The Nurses’ Float was the dream of five nurses in Southern California: Monica Weisbrich, BSN,RN; Judy Dahle, MS, MSG, RN; Paul Wafer, MBA, RN; Pat Spongberg, RN, BSN, CNOR (E) and Suzanne Ward, MA, MN, RN, CNOR (E), GC-C. They got together in 2007 to create the non-profit group Bare Root, Inc. and teamed with Phoenix Decorating Company to showcase the characteristics of a nurse through a woodland scene entitled “A Healing Place.” The float came to be known informally as The Nurses’ Float.
“Nurses across the nation felt a sense of pride as we watched the beautiful float honoring nursing’s contributions to the health of our communities during the Rose Parade,” said Patricia McFarland, MS, RN, FAAN, CEO of ACNL. “It is our privilege to continue the vision of the great nurse leaders from Bare Root by administering the Nurses Float Scholarship Fund. This scholarship reinforces ACNL’s commitment to lifelong learning to improve health care for all.”
