A nun gave birth to a baby boy in Italy after being pregnant and not knowing it. On Jan. 17, Huffington Post reported that the 31-year-old started experiencing stomach pain and was taken to a hospital. A short while later the nun gave birth to a 9-pound baby shocking everyone -- even herself.

"I did not know I was pregnant. I only felt a stomach pain," the nun was quoted as saying. Ironically (or not), the nun named her son after St. Francis of Assisi -- and Pope Francis. The baby's Italian name is Francesco. Other nuns from the "Little Disciples of Jesus" were very surprised to hear that one of their own gave birth -- nuns, you see, take a vow of chastity.

The nun gave birth on Wednesday of this week and she and her son are said to be doing well. Since she didn't even know that she was pregnant, she was not prepared to welcome a child so other new mothers in Rieti hospital have been helping out. Some women have been collecting items like blankets and clothes to donate to the new mother.

It is presumed that the nun will raise her son and live a life outside of the convent. There wasn't any information in the report that suggested otherwise and though shocked, the nun seemed happy about her surprise baby.

When a nun gives birth, people have plenty of things to say and there is a lot of judging going on, but it actually happens more than you think. In fact, there have been stories about nuns killing their newborns to "hide" their sexual activity. Chastity isn't for everyone.
