A nun gives birth to a baby boy, but she was unaware of the pregnancy. This news traveled quickly because a nun takes a vow of celibacy and this is a very unusual event. When a nun gives birth, or any woman gives birth, there’s usually no question about the obvious scenario that rendered her pregnant, but is this case different?

According to the BBC on Jan. 17, in this case, her superior is not questioning her claim that she was unaware that she was pregnant. The nun complained of stomach pains and called an ambulance. The nun gave birth to a baby boy and named him after the new Pope, Francis.

Since the 32-year-old came into the hospital, not knowing she was about to give birth, she was anything but prepared to have a baby and bring it home. Hospital nurses and staff scrambled to get her all the things she would need to care for the baby from diapers to clothes.

The 31-year-old nun, who is originally from San Salvador, plans to raise the baby boy herself. The convent where this nun calls home is near the town of Riefi, which is in central Italy. Her convent manages an old people’s home and this is where she works.

The local pastor Don Fabrizio Borrello said about the nun who gave birth:

"I guess she's telling the truth when she says she arrived at the hospital unaware of the pregnancy."
