Surgical facelifts, also considered facial rejuvenation techniques, truly turn back the hands of time. This procedure can literally erase 10 years from someone’s age.
Facelifts in San Diego remain a sought after procedure, but before taking that step, it’s important to find a board certified plastic surgeon who specializes in this procedure. During a consultation with a San Diego plastic surgeon, it’s important to ask not only what the surgery entails, but also the recovery portion, as well.
And this includes facial swelling and numbness.
While many patients return back to their normal activities within three weeks, no one else will really notice any discoloration or swelling. The initial postoperative swelling typically recedes in about three to four weeks.
Complete swelling from the surgery takes longer to recede.
And yes, it’s normal for patients to feel more facial puffiness than what they actually see in the mirror.
Postoperative swelling actually correlates with the type of facelift a patient has received. For example, a limited facelift with no fat transfer will show very minimal swelling.
On the other hand, a full facelift with fat transfer may have significant swelling.
Fat transfer is highly utilized during the surgery to add youthful fullness to the facial area. As people age, they lose this volume and the fat transfer can help restore this.
During this segment, plastic surgeons typically over graft with fat. This aspect is oftentimes perceived by the patient as swelling, but it’s really fat which is in the process of partially reabsorbing. Within a few weeks, the swelling will go away.
Numbness, however, can last for a longer period of time.
The numbness, of course, is caused by the procedure. For a surgical facelift, the skin must be separated from the underlying sensory nerves which are attached to that particular skin area. Following surgery, these sensory nerves will begin to reattach. The most common area for long lasting numbness is primarily in front of the ears.
These sensory nerves are quite forgiving and some sensation will begin to resolve in three months. For most patients, it can take up to 6 to 12 months for full healing.
Exceptional advances have been made in surgical facial rejuvenation. However, it’s important for each and every patient to realize that patience is required because plastic surgery is a journey.
