Number Theory wins Old Newton Cup

Number Theory (8-1 betting odds) won the Old Newton Cup at Haydock, earning his fourth win at the horse races. Number Theory took over Tepmokea two furlongs out. Quiz Mistress would finish second while Tepmokea ended third a length and a half away.

Number Theory edged out the win despite jockey Russ Kennemore coming in a pound overweight. "The race didn't really go to plan. There wasn't much pace, there was nothing to run at so I had to sit handy. Suddenly there was nothing in front of me. He likes to come through later in his races, but he's game and improving," said Kennemore.

The four-year-old Number Theory is trained by John Holt and owned by Sri-Lanka-born Mohan Fonseka. "We started coming here because the owner's family live round here and it's just snowballed from there," Leicestershire-based Holt told reporters afterwards. "We might have to think about the Ebor now. I think he'll stay the extra two furlongs."
