Over the past year, nail art of all kinds has exploded onto the fingertips of celebrities and "real folk" alike. We've seen everything from decals to acrylic add-ons to 15-minute gel manicures that last two weeks.
So what would the stars's fingernails be wearing to the Oscars? Extravagant nail art? No. Long, pointed acrylics being sported by pop stars worldwide? Not so much. This year, it was all about nude, nude, and more nude... with the occasional dark vamp shade. Which, when you think about it, makes a lot of sense for these particular celebrities and this particular event. They are, after all, wanting their gowns and jewelry to make the biggest statement.
At this year's Oscars, the gowns were intricate and larger-than-life. Sandra Bullock, who is often thought of as "America's Sweetheart" and can be a tad conservative in her dress, wore see-through black lace- as did pregnant Mrs. Channing Tatum, Jenna Dewan.
There were sequins sparkling (Nicole Kidman,) beads shining (Jessica Chastain,) and jewels shimmering (Jennifer Hudson.) Every type of fabric popped up this year, from ribbon-y satin (Anne Hathaway,) intricate laces (Amanda Seyfried,) even black velvet (Salma Hayek.)
When the stars, and their stylists, work so hard to wear the perfect gown, the perfect hairstyle, and the perfect accessories, it's not the day to let your nails be blaring. And, true to form, the nails we saw on the red carpet were mostly sheer or light-nude shades. A few chose a touch shimmer or glitter, but most stuck with basic nude polish.
There were a select few, thankfully, who went a bit more bold, wearing dark, vamp tones like black, burgundy or even navy. Check out the slideshow to see who wore what... on their nails.
