Nuclear tank leaking at Hanford site: 'Nuclear leak is very disturbing news'

A nuclear tank leaking in Washington has many state officials and the public worried this week, the LA Times reported this Saturday, Feb. 16. An old tank with highly radioactive waste has been leaking nearly 300 gallons per year, which authorities realized after the amount of toxic sludge within the leaking tank was low this 2013.

While a nuclear tank leaking is not necessarily new at the Hanford site, this nuclear leak is the first confirmed issue since the federal government passed a security program in 2005 to remove liquids from exposed single-shell tanks.

“This is very disturbing news,” said Governor Inslee at a major news conference this Friday about the Hanford site’s nuclear tank leaking. “I am alarmed about this on many levels. “This raises issues about leaking toxic waste on other single-shell tanks and potential harm.”
