On Saturday, March 9th, Denton’s House of Quad hosted a double header of travel team roller derby action, with a men’s bout opening the evening and a women’s bout concluding it. In both bouts, the home team proved victorious as the Denton County Outlaws topped the Tulsa Derby Militia, and the North Texas Derby Revolution Fighting Unicorns besting the Cowboy Capital Rollergirls.

In the men’s bout, Denton County rode a 168 point first half into a dominating 282 – 161 victory. Nearly half those points – 72 of them – were scored by Mason “Teacup” Adams. Adams finished as the bouts leading scorer, tallying 100 points when the night was through.

Other top scorers for the Outlaws were John “Lucky Charmer” West with 63 points, and Kyle “Haterade” Divers with 53. In addition, Divers was named the bout’s MVP.

On the other side of the track, Tulsa was led by Pickle, who scored 77 of his teams points. Following behind him was Freak of Nature with 29, Tin Man with 23, and Goliath with 22. Freak of Nature was named the bout’s Best Jammer, while Goliath was named Best Blocker.

The women’s bout was slightly closer, but NTDR still won over Cowboy Capital by a wide margin, 246 – 178. Although they started off slow and trailed 84 – 61 at halftime, the Fighting Unicorns turned it on in the second half, scoring a whopping 185 points on the way to a big victory over their in-state rivals from Stephenville.

The bout was close throughout the first half, but it was a 27-point jam by Reckless Intimidator in the half’s final jam that gave Cowboy Capital the lead going into the intermission.

But when both teams returned to the track, two epic scoring runs changed the course of the bout.

The first came shortly after the second half started. A 30-point barrage in the half’s second jam from Cowboy Capital’s Hot Shot gave her team a 114 – 65 lead, it appeared as if they would never look back. But in the next six jams, the Rollergirls failed to score a single point, while NTDR exploded for 79 points, led by Kate “Party McFly” Pezzulli’s 30 point jam and Ashley “Dashin Assassin” Faragher’s 22 point jam.

By the time Cowboy Capital got back on the scoreboard, they found themselves down 145 – 118, and while they kept it close, they could never catch up. A 25-point jam from Gillotine Grace brought them to within 178 – 145, but moments later two explosive jams from Pezzulli and Faragher gave the Fighting Unicorns an insurmountable lead.

Pezzulli’s jam in particular was momentous, as she made an incredible 8 scoring passes on her way to a 37 point jam. She was the bout’s high scorer with 94 points, and was named Best Jammer. Faragher followed with 74 points, and Laura “Beelzebetsy” Dromgoole added 63.

Top scorers for Cowboy Capital were Gillotine Grace with 50 points, Reckless Intimidator with 47, and Hot Shot 46. Psycho Filly added 35 points for the Rollergirls.

Cowboy Capital’s iDara was named the bout’s best blocker, and the NTDR’s Elizabeth Washington was named the bout’s MVP.
