Nrityagram Dance Ensemble at Popejoy Hall

Nrityagram Dance Ensemble, one of India’s premier dance companies, is coming to Albuquerque! The ensemble melds the classical Indian technique of Odissi with modern elements to create a spectacle of Dance Theater.

The style of Odissi originated in the Indian state of Orissa and is considered the oldest form of Indian dance. The style distinguishes itself from the other classical forms because of its use of curved figures. Arms, legs and even the torso are all manipulated to create curved shapes while other forms of classical Indian technique often utilize sharper angles. Another distinguishing characteristic of Odissi is the use of the upper torso in a fluid fashion.

Judith Mackrell of The Guardian describes their performance as “ancient dance, joyously… performed in the present tense.” Leigh Witchel from the New York Post calls the finale “a pure display of movement fireworks.”
