If the NRA has its druthers, it would have everyone armed with guns to protect one’s person from the proverbial bad guy who means harm. Here is a world where arguments could be resolved with a gun duel; where road rage will result in not two middle fingers raised, but with one or more shot dead with a gun through the windshield; where a door-to-door salesperson is shot because he or she looks like a terrorist; or where 2 kids in the playground argues about whose father has a bigger gun or that one would run home to tell dad to shot the other kid’s dad to settle the score. It is a world divided between those who are afraid because of the proliferation of guns and those who unabashedly or cowardly brandish their gums and willing to shoot with little or no provocation, and worse, with anger management issues.
Who wants to live in this world?
The NRA purports to serve the gun sports and no one begrudge this, but not everyone is into gun sports so why arm everyone? Should everyone be required to purchase golf clubs to bolster the bottom line of golf club manufacturers who contributes to such cause?
Oh yes, there is the Second Amendment. There is no question individual liberty must be protected but if we channel the founding fathers who just won independence from tyranny through armed rebellion, they wanted everyone to own and store guns in the event there is another call to arms to protect liberty and topple tyranny. Can the NRA topple the entire arm forces they generally help fund with taxes and has weapons of mass destruction? This is now a different world and political changes are made through the process of self-government.
NRA blames the pathologically insane and claims should be the focus of cause and solution to gun violence. But this is a separate and distinct social problem. Insanity is a disease and society must come to grips with it, not to isolate it as the exception to the rights under the Second Amendment. There are many forms and degrees of insanity and should be managed because an insane person so inclined will do harm and destruction with or without guns.
It all comes down to ECONOMICS and whether society wants to live in the NRA world. There would be a proliferation of guns as long as huge profits are made in the sale and ownership of guns. NRA owes its very existence to memberships and funding from gun lobby groups. The Second Amendment is the propaganda and it’s a very successful business model.
