NPD: Xbox One tops PS4 in December sales for North America

Sony may have taken the next-gen lead in worldwide sales for 2013 but Microsoft announced Thursday that both the Xbox One and Xbox 360 topped their generational competition in the Playstation 4 and Playstation 3 for December per the just released NPD report.

The Xbox One sold 908,000 units in North America for the month December according to Microsoft while the Xbox 360 still sold strong at 634,000 units. Both ate up 46 percent of the hardware sales for the month.

“We’re grateful for the excitement and support of our fans – many purchasing their next Xbox console and many joining the Xbox family for the first time,” said Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of marketing, strategy and business for Xbox. “Our journey is just starting, with more innovation, games and entertainment coming in 2014 and far beyond.”

Sony's senior director of corporate communications, Dan Race responded to the news (via CVG) by stating, "According to the latest NPD report, PlayStation 4 remains the cumulative leader for next gen console sales in the US since the launch on November 15."

"We sold every PS4 available at retail in the US and were out of stock in December due to overwhelming consumer demand. With more than 4.2 million PS4 systems sold worldwide, it's clear that the PS4's gaming and entertainment features are resonating with large audiences and we're doing our best to provide additional inventory in all of the 53 countries where it's available."

Stock for the PS4 remains in very short supply as Sony tries to fill stock for 53 countries while the Xbox One is available in only 13. This has led to a situation in North America where the console sells out quickly when ever it appears online and mega-online retailer Amazon has taken pre-orders for upcoming shipments.
