Total software sales for September increased 52 percent to more than $750 million according to the September NPD report picked up by GamesIndustry.biz. As expected, GTA V gave the video game industry a "much needed shot in the arm," per NPD analyst Liam Callahan. Rockstar's latest open world adventure "represented over 50 percent of dollar sales in September, and had the highest first month sales than any other previous launch in the Grand Theft Auto franchise."
It also helped make the PS3 the top selling home console for the month.
Worldwide, GTA V sold a billion dollars worth in just three days which set records for the games industry but details on the number of copies sold and in what region has not yet been announced.
As for other software, Madden NFL 25 came in second place followed by NBA 2K14, Diablo III and FIFA 14. Even Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMix had a solid opening as a PS3 exclusive coming in as the sixth best game sold for the month.
