In the recent years the bikini segment of bodybuilding competitions has been brought into the mainstream with a different set of rules. Although bikini is now part of the sport there have been many statements and feelings on whether it is considered a "real sport" due to the look of the competitors. The bikini competitor is smoother, softer and not nearly as muscular as your figure or bodybuilding competitors. In some cases this makes competitiors feel that they have worked harder than others to be stage ready in one of the most subjective sports out there.
Besides the difference in physiques of the bikini and figure/bodybuilding competitor; competition suits were different, also. NPC rules state competitors in the figure class must wear suits with bottoms that cover 50% of the gluteal area and straps of the suits should extenuate the musculature of the athlete. Bikini, on the other hand, was able to wear the suit of choice; including thong bottoms. But, this is now changing. The NPC has passed a new rule stating all bikini competitors must wear a suit bottom that covers 50% of the gluteal area due to the numerous complaints they have been recieving. The NPC recommends that any bikini competitor who is questioning the appropriateness of their suit bring a second suit for safe measure.
The NPC is saying the final decision will lay at the feet of the District Chairman or his representative at the competition.
Here are some sites to locate bikini's appropriate for the new ruling:
Vandella Costumes has recently opened her 2010 bikini line
Ujena has off the rack suits for competition and play
Swimwear Boutique also has off the rack suits for competition and play
Victoria's Secret offers off the rack suits for competition and play
**** I have ordered from both Vandella Costumes and from Ujena and was very pleased with my purchases. I have not ordered suits from Swimwear Boutique or Victoria's Secret.

I'm sure this will frustrate some competitors.

I agree with the ruling. I think there should be no need to literally "show your ass" to get a good score on gluts.
I agree. I don't think you need to have it all hanging out. If you have a great build a thong isn't going to make a difference.
I guess this can actually help some competitors but for those with great glutes I imagine they'd want to show them off.
Its needs to become more about the Female athletic form and not a sluty T&A show...
Good in theory but what happened at the Arnold no competitor won that complied with the rules. They were looking for ROCKSTAR Porn suits. Many did not have 25% coverage. No pre-contest measuring or pre-approvals for the suits and the girls took advantage of it. If you have a rule enforce it. What about the dissimilarities of the amateur bikini girls and the pros, shouldn't they both be judged by the same standards. many looked as though they just strolled in off the beach rather than trained competitors. Girls that would have won their class in the IFBB were passed over for having abs. Get some consistency so these competitors know how to train for the shows.
Driver451- I could not agree with you more. I was actually disappointed by the suits worn at the Arnold by the bikini competitors. They were basically thongs and I don't find that to be appropriate for a BB show. They're are huge distinctions between the amateurs and the pros and the inconsistency has made it difficult for bikini competitors who do train hard. Consistency is key but no where to be found in the competitions.
Ujena does have some cute suits and well designed. Great report Lisa...
