Perhaps the name of Lionsgate's hit film should be changed to "Now You See Me…in HD." The hit magician caper, starring Jesse Eisenberg, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Mark Ruffalo and Woody Harrelson(among others) has soared to the number one spot in terms of digital and on demand sales since its release over the long Labor Day weekend. Lionsgate also noted that seventy percent of the digital transactions were in the high definition format.
"Now You See Me" follows a team of four magicians who use their elaborate illusions to pull off heists. The performers then give the money to their audience members, Robin Hood-style. This draws the attention of a pair of FBI agents(Ruffalo, Melanie Laurent) bent on bringing the team to justice. The film was released at the end of May, going on to gross $117 million in the U.S.
In what is a now-common practice, "Now You See Me" was made available via digital download before the DVD and Blu-Ray were released on September 4. Hard copies of the film also hit the number one spot in their respective media sales. Lionsgate's Ron Schwartz and Jim Packer commented:
"The title has demonstrated broad-based strength in every format and on every platform where it has been released, underscoring our commitment to utilize digital, on demand and packaged media to offer our consumers a broad spectrum of choice."
"Now You See Me" was released by Summit Entertainment, which is part of Lionsgate. The film has already grossed over $300 million worldwide and has yet to open in markets such as China and Japan.
