Apply those TV ads proclaiming “once it’s gone it’s gone” to “Now You See It and Now You Don’t,” an art event that opens this weekend at the Flat Iron Arts Building in the Wicker Park Bucktown neighborhood.

Then, you’ll understand that unlike museum shows that move to another venue, if you don’t get over to the Flat Iron Artists’ Association’s event, May 2 until June 6, 2014 you won’t see the creative output of about 40 artists.

Artists will be working on their murals up to the Friday night 6 to 10 p.m. opening. But June 6 they will be gone, as in totally covered with white paint.

Organizer Charles Rees who has a studio in the building and is a director of the FIAA started it about five years ago.

It’s a popular event,” says Rees. ”We were doing First Fridays, but wanted to make it more unique.”

What he came up with was a continuous band of murals on the building’s winding hallways with artists taking different wall sections.

“While we’re painting, others come in and say they want to do it,” he says.

To talk to the artists who painted a section or artists in their studios, come this Friday because the tenants still open their art work space on First Fridays.

Details: The Flat Iron Arts Building is at 1579 N. Milwaukee Ave., Chicago, IL 60622 where Damen and North Avenues meet. Suggested donation is $5.FIAA is a not-for-profit group that promotes the arts in Wicker Park and Bucktown. For more information visit First Friday.
