For its first five years, viewers of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" saw the show just keep getting better as each new season began. It was in "The Mary Tyler Moore Show: The Complete Sixth Season," however, where the unforgettable moments fans still remember were a weekly occurrence. Each character was spotlighted.
There was Ted's wedding -- and their later marriage difficulties when the usually meek Georgette (played wonderfully by Georgia Engel) puts her foot down.
There was the night Lou Grant spent with man-hungry Sue Ann Nivens, played superbly by Betty White. Lou didn't want anyone to find out, but Mary spilled it.
Murray Slaughter (Gavin MacLeod) played second banana on fictional WJM until he took a job as Sue Ann Nivens' producer. Sue Ann wasn't the easiest person to work for.
The crowning moment of the season -- and one of the best moments in the series -- was "Chuckles Bites the Dust," which won an Emmy for Best Comedy Writing. It's easy to see why when you watch the episode. (See the video.) Mary Tyler Moore was superb.
The series also won four other Emmys for this season's work: Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series (Mary Tyler Moore), Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (Ted Knight) and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series (Betty White).
A TV classic -- and it's great to have this season on DVD. It's well worth getting.
