Family members are not always enthusiastically behind preppers and their efforts. This is one area of prepping, however, where wives are more likely to support their husbands.
Driver training courses can be conducted in a formal school or more informally by text, interactive CD-Rom, or internet, and with supervised driving. Depending upon the age of the driver, driver training courses are required in many, but not all states.
Even if driver training courses are required in your state, preppers would do well to supplement such courses with parental guidance and instruction for novice teen drivers. This is especially true in the Baltimore area, where driving is particularly dangerous.
One way to supplement the driver training courses is for preppers to ask their teen drivers a different question each day. Examples of such questions might be:
- Is texting while driving more dangerous than drunk driving? (six times more dangerous)
- How fast and how far can you safely drive on your temporary use spare tire? (50 mph and 2,000 miles)
- If your car has an automatic transmission, should you (the inexperienced teenager) push or tow the car to start it? (no)
- Do you understand what all of the warning light symbols and messages mean? (hopefully, yes)
Such questions might give reality checks to overconfident teens. After teens cannot correctly answer such questions, prepper parents can promote the Driver Owner’s Manual by showing the pages in it that have the answers to questions such as these. Prepper parents should stress that the Driver Owner’s Manual must always be stored in the glove compartment of the car.
Car accidents not only cause property damage, injury, and death, but also can involve lengthy legal disputes when car insurance payments do not satisfy the accident victims who are not at fault. Although car accidents are not large scale disasters, they are personal disasters to accident victims and their families. Thus, preppers should try to lessen the chances of their teens becoming involved in such accidents.
