November is Adopt a Senior Pet month

Did you know that dachshunds can live to be 20 years old? In honor of Adopt a Senior Pet Month, give your older doxie babies a hug ... and consider adopting another one.

Often overlooked in shelters by potential families who don't know how wonderful they are, older pets don't come with the same baggage as younger pets. They are usually housetrained, most have long since tired of destroying things and, most importantly, they really need a home.

Says Anne Schwarz, a mobile-adoption volunteer at for the City of Los Angeles's North Central Animal Care Center:

It breaks my heart to see older dogs in the shelter - they were somebody's pet and had a place in the world for so many years, and now they're alone in a strange, noisy cage, with no structure to their day and an uncertain future. They often just look bewildered. But when you bring them home and give them a warm bed, daily walks and a family to bond with, they are transformed into loving, easygoing companions. I've adopted several senior dogs and seeing them blossom in their new home been a wonderful experience every time.

If you aren't able to adopt a dachshund at this time, consider helping out at your local shelter or dachshund rescue. Shelters need people who can spend time with the dogs, walking them or giving them love.

Dachshund rescues always need foster parents, so if you aren't able to add a permanent dog to your home, you can have one temporarily. You can also volunteer at a mobile adoption event, helping bring awareness to the plight of older dogs.
